Union Jack
 
['juːnjən 'dʒæk, englisch] der, - -s/- -s, volkstümliche Bezeichnung der britischen Nationalflagge. Das rote Kreuz auf weißem Grund ist das Symbol des heiligen Georg, dessen Kult sich in England zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts durchsetzte, sodass das Georgskreuz zum Nationalzeichen der Engländer wurde. Das weiße Andreaskreuz (auf blauem Grund; Symbol des schottischen Landespatrons Andreas) ist bereits seit dem 12. Jahrhundert das Nationalzeichen der Schotten. 1606 wurde das rote Georgskreuz mit dem Andreaskreuz zum ersten U. J. verbunden; die Namengebung leitet sich ab von König Jakob I., seit 1603 König von England und Schottland in Personalunion. Durch die Errichtung des Vereinigten Königreiches Großbritannien und Irland 1801 kam noch das rote Schrägkreuz des irischen Schutzpatrons Patrick in die Nationalflagge.
